Through this series we follow Ceony Twill. She’s just graduated top of her class from Tagis Praff School for the Magically Inclined, and has been assigned to an apprenticeships to become a paper magician. In book one, an Excisioner (flesh magician) arrives at the cottage Ceony is living and rips out the heart of her mentor.

I enjoyed the idea of the magic system in this world- a magician may work with one man-made material only. However, throughout the series it did feel like the spells which each magician could perform were very convenient to the situation at hand.

There also seemed to be a key plot point in each novel which came from nowhere and felt out of place with the tone of the rest of the book.

Overall, this series had its issues, but each book was a fun, quick read. Nothing particularly captured my attention, but these books are frequently on sale for 99p on Kindle. So for that price they’re worth picking up if you need a quick fantasy read.
